Words from the Board January-February 2017

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.  When I let go of what I have, I receive what I need.”

                                                              ― Tao Te Ching

Last month, we shared our experience at the Board of Trustee’s annual retreat with the “winds of change” that have been guiding us as we make our transition from our current building.  As many of you know, we accepted an offer from a group to purchase our current building.  The 40-day inspection period allowed by the contract passed, and on November 4th, the buyers indicated that they intended to proceed with the contract.  Our contract sets our closing date for February 2, 2017, and provides for at least three extensions.  At this point, we intend to ask for at least one extension, which will take us through March 4, 2017.

In preparation for the sale of our building and our move, we have been touring a very large number of locations, including retail sites, office sites, light industrial warehouses, and others.  For a variety of reasons, none of these sites are ideal and we have decided not to proceed with them.  At the Board retreat, we discussed ideas for our new home, and discerned that we wanted to go in a different direction as we focus on our future, one that allows us to co-create a vision for not only our physical home for Unity in Frederick, but for the future of Unity in Frederick itself.

On the weekend of January 13th to 15th, 2017, we will host Rev. Kelly Isola to help us discuss and usher in our vision for the future.  Kelly holds a Masters of Divinity degree from the Unity Institute. She is certified in a number of different areas, and she partners with spiritual communities and non-profit organizations to help them understand their past, make peace with it, and co-create a shared vision for their future. She works with individuals, churches, boards and youth groups using conflict coaching, mediation, Spiritual Direction as well as leadership and organizational development.  All are invited to our session with her on Saturday, January 14th for an open discussion about our direction.

In the interim, we have been exploring options for our physical location.  We are working with one of our congregants, who has offered the use of her large theater space for our Celebration Services on Sundays.  We have also toured different sites that would provide facilities for offices, classes, and our other activities.  We are very confident that as our vision for our physical space coalesces, we will, at the same time, be guided to a new, relevant, and exciting vision for the future of Unity in Frederick.
