The Unity Board of Trustees has completed an amazing and extremely productive year! The most extensive accomplishment was fully updating Unity Policies and By-Laws in accordance with Unity Worldwide Ministries.
Words from the Board
The Board has been envisioning solutions to our space concerns. We love our space, it has a special energy, we can all feel it! Spiritual healing and growth occurs in it and throughout our community daily. And we want to be able to grow to be more inclusive and to have an inviting space for families and children. Water problems in our basement this month reinforced our focus on finding a permanent solution. And our campaign to raise money to repair our roof above us is of equal importance. We need to think out of the box to move beyond our current space constraints.
Dear Unity Friends,
Why does it snow? What is our God within telling us? Years ago whenever it rained I thought it was God giving me permission to slow down, let go and
enjoy. Even though it rained I would still go to the beach, jump in the puddles and enjoy anyway. It gave me permission to relax. I could skip the chores, stop expecting so much from myself, read a book, appreciate. Well the snow is the winter version of the rain.
Hello everyone…I do love the term Unitics…so I lovingly call you such. I am a new board member. There are seven of us, and we take turns writing a few lines for the newsletter. I wondered, last year when the board went on retreat…I’m thinking why go on retreat when you’ve only just elected a new member(s). I no longer wonder, this is not a reward for being a board member, as “retreat” might imply. This was a working weekend, hands down, no fuss, work us til we drop weekend! We learned what it is to put our best thoughts forward for the growth and health of Unity, of each of us.
“Unity in Frederick ~ A Spiritual Community” was established 20 years ago! 20 years! It is a significant achievement. A time to celebrate our presence! Our accomplishments! Our community! With great JOY! The Board of Trustees was enthusiastic about scheduling a series of community celebrations! It was nice to spend some time on fun, in addition to “doing business.” We are very grateful to the committees for each of the celebrations!
Things I love about Unity in Frederick: coming into the building and being immediately enveloped by the healing energy of our sacred space -- I feel transported to a deeper level of awareness; the ongoing support and celebration of diversity in our spiritual community -- I feel very supported in being able to get married this year; the healing energy and support of each person’s individual spiritual path and growth-I feel greater understanding of my life vision and how to achieve it through the classes I attend; the building of community as exemplified in our Talent or Not Show- I had pure
When I first walked into Unity, I knew I had found what I didn’t even know I was looking for: a community of friends who treat each other like family.
Actually, our vision statement says it best:
Unity in Frederick is a vibrant and inclusive spiritual community, centered in God, making a difference by living and sharing the empowering principles of love, peace and prosperity through the expression of the Christ within.
I like that. And, I believe it!
The usual title of this column is “Words from the Board,” but this time I’m calling it Opposite Words from the Board. I decided to write about certain words and the images brought to mind when saying or hearing those words; just a little something to lighten the mood. (See how that works?)
Think lightness, brightness, upward, sky high, heavenly. Do your eyes automatically look up? Now think darkness, gloom, downward, hell. Got a scowl on your face yet? Try these: sunshine, soaring, warmth. And these: stark, cold, dreary. I hope you notice a difference.
The start of this new season provides a wonderful opportunity for us to renew. It’s a time to discover which parts of ourselves we’d like to change and expand upon, and which parts we need simply to embrace.
The Dalai Lama walks into a pizza shop and says, "Can you make me one with everything?"
When I read this joke on a friend’s Facebook wall it truly made me LOL. It also reminded me that this is the essence of our 5 Basic Unity principles:
