When I first walked into Unity, I knew I had found what I didn’t even know I was looking for: a community of friends who treat each other like family.
Actually, our vision statement says it best:
Unity in Frederick is a vibrant and inclusive spiritual community, centered in God, making a difference by living and sharing the empowering principles of love, peace and prosperity through the expression of the Christ within.
I like that. And, I believe it!
The usual title of this column is “Words from the Board,” but this time I’m calling it Opposite Words from the Board. I decided to write about certain words and the images brought to mind when saying or hearing those words; just a little something to lighten the mood. (See how that works?)
Think lightness, brightness, upward, sky high, heavenly. Do your eyes automatically look up? Now think darkness, gloom, downward, hell. Got a scowl on your face yet? Try these: sunshine, soaring, warmth. And these: stark, cold, dreary. I hope you notice a difference.
The start of this new season provides a wonderful opportunity for us to renew. It’s a time to discover which parts of ourselves we’d like to change and expand upon, and which parts we need simply to embrace.

When I read this joke on a friend’s Facebook wall it truly made me LOL. It also reminded me that this is the essence of our 5 Basic Unity principles:
"Remember that you are a teacher, you are helping people, making them feel safer, taking them from fear to love, from ignorance to knowledge." - Stewart Wilde
Do you see yourself in this quote? Or do you believe that those in leadership positions are the ones who teach? Hint: Leaders are people, just like you and me.
